How to Get People Tagging Your Business on Socials 2024

Let’s get back to the basics for a second. Tagging— an element of social media that has probably gone over your head in the past couple of years whilst trying to keep up with the constant changes in social media algorithms, customer’s preferred content consumption and overall, new marketing strategies that have taken centre stage in the success of businesses in 2023. Getting tagged and the importance of getting tagged has gotten lost in the circus of Social Media. Therefore, this article will be a reminder of what tagging is, why it’s crucial for your business and how to get tagged on social media.

What is a tag?

Tags allow social media users to engage an individual, business or any entity with a social profile when they mention (with the @ symbol) them in a post or comment. On Instagram, TikTok and Facebook, tagging notifies the recipient and hyperlinks to the tagged profile. The Twitter equivalent of tagging other users is by inserting a relevant hashtag or tweeting at (@) them, depending on the objective. 

Why is tagging important?

The straightforward answer: engagement. When creating your social media strategy, there are two things you want to focus on— how you’re interacting with your customers and how you’re getting them to respond.  

Amassing customer engagement is just as important, if not more than your brand’s promotional approach and messaging within and around your content.

The key to a successful social media strategy is encouraging and ensuring your audience is constantly talking about your brand, engaging with your content and community as well as their willingness to share (tag) your business.

All of this buzz surrounding your brand online is called social mentions. And having a plan in place on how to encourage these social mentions is essential. Here are some ideas on how to get the ball rolling with that:

Ask your customers for reviews

A customer’s review has the potential to make or break your business. So keep ensuring your services are up to par. 

Satisfactory service means happy customers and happy customers would gladly share their experiences of your business on their social and, in turn, encourage their friends and family who have seen their reviews to give your page a visit and ultimately your venue. Don’t be shy to ask for a review. 

Offer a cheeky discount

Discounts, sales, competitions— power tools for encouraging tags! Your customers are always looking for bargains. Offering them monthly discounts in exchange for “tagging a friend” is a foolproof way to get more customers to visit your socials and ultimately your restaurant, bar or hotel.

So, it’s best to offer discounts every now and then to help your business flourish. Furthermore, to increase your sales and bookings.

Approach influencers with more followers

If you want your business to be tagged more often, start investing in influencer marketing. Pay influencers to advertise your business for you. Ensure you are collaborating with influencers that are suited to your business (if you're a restaurant, collaborate with food bloggers,). You almost always want to collaborate with someone that has a higher follower count than you— this will get you more followers, more exposure and more people checking out your page. 

Create a chill ambience

You already know the atmosphere of your venue plays a large role in the success of your business. Getting attracted to beauty is human nature right? Beautiful venues equate to more foot traffic (neon signs around the venue, for example, make for great social media content if I do say so myself). The beauty and comfort of a business will make its customers keen to take pictures and are likely going to tag the venue on their stories or posts. Their friends and family will automatically see it, will want to visit it and recommend it to their family and friends too.

Always be available for your customers

Prompt responses are highly valued by customers. Always be within easy access of your audience.  Make sure to respond to your customers’ inquiries, calls or booking requests as soon as possible. Efficient customer service will help you get unlimited tags.

Also, hire attentive staff who are reliable and devoted towards their job and meet the level of availability on the ground as much as it is on social media. Remember hard work is the key to success.

There is no harm in asking your customers to tag you. A satisfied customer will willingly tag you without hesitation.
